Wolff's first ride-on stripper runs the whole working day powered by Briggs & Stratton's Vanguard lithium-ion commercial battery packs
WOLFF, as part of the Uzin Utz SE, was founded in Germany in 1954, and has since been a premium partner for the global flooring trade industry for over 70 years. Until now, ride-on floor strippers have run on lead-acid batteries which didn’t allow for consistent use across a full eight-hour working day due to usable torque typically dropping well before the battery was empty. This frustration drove WOLFF to set a clear goal: to manufacture a machine that would work from start to finish with no loss of performance. This goal has been met through the brand’s first ride-on floor stripper model “Independence”, which delivers constant performance over the entire working day of up to 12 hour powered by up to two of Briggs & Stratton’s VanguardTM 48V 5.0kWh Fixed Battery Packs (Fi5.0)

Burak Nur, Head of Product Management at Uzin Utz Tools, says: “At WOLFF, we wanted to introduce a machine that not only had a longer battery life, but one that still performed as standard when the battery was at 20%, to meet our long-standing product promise to customers. During development, extended and consistent battery power was not the only crucial requirement for the Independence, WOLFF also sought to:
Eliminate the end-of-day chores that come with flooded batteries: watering, corrosion checks and ventilation
Offer a solution to the ever-tightening industry restrictions around noise pollution and local emissions
With these requirements clearly identified, WOLFF’s engineers went to market to identify suitable lithium packs and found that Vanguard’s Fi5.0 met the electrical brief right away. Its 51.6 V nominal voltage sat perfectly on a 48-V DC bus, while its 98.7 Ah / 5.0 kWh capacity could be paralleled with up to ten packs, so that two units combined would deliver the more than 10 kWh needed for powering a double shift.
Steffen Hoffmann, Application Engineer Electrification and Engines at Briggs & Stratton’s European Power Application Centre states: “Our Vanguard Fi5.0 battery is the perfect fit for electric indoor applications such as the Wolff floor stripper, as it operates with zero emissions at the point of use and reduces noise levels. When used in parallel, the two batteries communicate via CANbus and the J1939 protocol, which provides real-time data on charge level, temperature, and current flow. This ensures optimal load balancing, extended runtime, and maximum system reliability and safety.


By using the Briggs & Stratton’s Vanguard Fi.5.0 battery model, the Independence floor stripper has a complete maintenance free drivetrain. With no outgassing and no refilling needed, thereby mitigating the need for daily water top-ups, eye wash stations and explosive hydrogen management, all requirements that come with using lead-acid batteries. As a result, the need for Health and Safety Executive paperwork and downtime is minimised. Better yet, the fully electric battery system delivers reduced noise levels and zero local emissions, while the battery is small enough to fit into the small chassis, sized at 78 cm.
The product development stage also placed durability and warranty at the forefront. As a result, the Vanguard Fi5.0’s ability to deliver 2,000 cycles before capacity drops to 80% - translating to five years of daily charging, which is triple the life of a typical AGM pack - makes it an obvious investment for busy organisations. In addition, Vanguard provides a 8 year commercial warranty for the battery - offering additional piece of mind for users and OEMs.

Burak Nur, Head of Product Management at Uzin Utz Tools, says: “The integration process of the Fi5.0 battery was seamless. Two packs can be easily mounted beneath the operator platform where their combined mass doubles as ballast for blade pressure.
Conveniently, the battery packs share the machine’s native 48-V rail, meaning no DC converters are required. Data from the batteries flows straight onto the machine’s one-hand remote and CAN messages from the Battery Management System are decoded by the WOLFF controller so the operator can see a battery gauge. When it’s time to recharge, the Independence stripper comes with two 1050 W chargers that plug directly into the wall at 230V, both refilling overnight or a single pack can recharge to full in three hours.

With the Fi5.0 already carrying UN 38.3 transport tests and CE-ready documentation, WOLFF simply had to run an end-of-line vibration test and dust test to validate launching the machine to market.”
