Swardman powers one of the widest single-reel mowers worldwide with Vanguard® 200 single-cylinder engine
Czech garden machinery business Swardman s.r.o designs and produces premium reel mowers for precision-cut lawns. The company serves customers across the EU, USA, and Australia with its range of mowers, accessories and consultancy on achieving a flawless lawn.

Having worked in a successful partnership with Briggs & Stratton for many years, the team at Swardman knew where to turn when seeking a durable and reliable professional engine for its first professional mower. The brand’s well-recognised industry name and reputation confirmed it, as Michael Suchanka, CEO at Swardman says.
“We were confident that choosing a Vanguard engine would give us reliability and Briggs & Stratton’s strong customer service. In addition, the extended engine service intervals provide significant added value by reducing the TCO and downtime."

Exceptional load acceptance and fast engine responsiveness
The requirement was to provide a power supply of 6hp, while also meeting the weight limitation of staying under 20kg. The Vanguard 200 single cylinder engine met both of these metrics. A horizontal shaft drop-fit solution, with no re-engineering required, the Vanguard 200 features exclusive, market-driven innovations, such as TransportGuard™, a 3-in-1 control that eliminates oil/fuel dilution. The engine enjoys optimised fuel management to improve resistance to stale fuel and lower total cost of ownership (TCO) thanks to its unmatched 600-hour air filter replacement intervals - double the industry standard. Plus, the Vanguard 200 includes a new optimised 3-step starting process that allows for a shorter rope pull with less force required. It is tested down to -29°C to ensure easier starting in all temperatures.

Swardman was able to integrate the engine using Briggs & Stratton’s supplied 3D drawings, while the frame and mounting flange preparation was also accelerated using data supplied by the engine manufacturer. Mr. Tomáš Lunda, chief designer of Swardman explains, “There were no modifications needed to integrate the engine into the mower and the exceptional load acceptance and fast reaction to the load changes of Vanguard engines were critical to successfully pass the testing phase. The lower vibration was also a significant benefit.”
The Edwin high-performance professional reel mower is specifically designed for football pitches, offering an incredible cutting width of 95cm and a reel mower design that delivers an exceptionally precise cut. Equipped with an 8-blade reel as standard, the Edwin 95 is one of the widest single-reel mowers available worldwide. The chassis is made entirely of metal for durability, minimising the use of plastic components. It also features a lightweight fabric 150 litre grass catcher and mowing performance of up to 7,885 m² per hour, allowing a standard football pitch to be mowed in just one hour.
Tomas Mika, Manager Regional Sales for Central Eastern Europe & Balkans at Briggs & Stratton, says: “The Vanguard 200 is one of our top-selling engines for many reasons. It’s reliable and powerful, yet lightweight, making this single-cylinder horizontal shaft engine an excellent choice for professional applications." With the added value of our free-of-charge extended warranty, customers can enjoy four years of peace of mind while using Swardman’s exceptional product.
Swardman is delighted with the product’s performance, in particular the exceptional load acceptance and fast engine responsiveness, which ensures uninterrupted operation. Michael. Suchanka concludes, “We were confident that choosing a Vanguard engine would give us reliability and Briggs & Stratton’s strong customer service. In addition, the extended engine service intervals provide significant added value by reducing the TCO and downtime.”
