HOW SHOULD I PROPERLY MAINTAIN A LI-ION BATTERY?
- This FAQ article applies to all Vanguard battery packs -
Content

By following these steps, you can ensure proper storage and maintenance of our Vanguard Li-Ion batteries, extending their lifespan and performance for the upcoming season.
Before using or powering on the application, inspect the battery thoroughly for any signs of damage. Check the connectors, terminals, and housing for cracks, gashes, bulges, warping, or other damages. Do not use the battery if any damage is detected.
If the battery is damaged or shows signs of damage, leakage, burns, or unusual noises, do not use it. Instead, consult a Briggs & Stratton Authorized Service Dealer for instructions on proper handling or disposal.

Prior to storing the battery, ensure it is charged to around 50-60% of its capacity (SOC) to prevent over-discharge during storage. This helps maintain battery health and longevity.
Store the battery in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Maintain a storage temperature between 10°C to 25°C. Extreme temperatures, whether high or low, accelerate the degradation of battery materials.

Periodically check the charge level of stored batteries, especially if stored for several months. If the charge drops significantly below 30% SOC, consider topping up the charge to prevent deep discharge.
Avoid fully discharging lithium-ion batteries during storage, as this can cause irreversible damage. If storing batteries for an extended period, charge and discharge them to maintain optimal performance.
Before using batteries stored over winter, inspect them again for any signs of damage or deterioration. Ensure the battery is clean and free from any metal objects to avoid short circuits.
After winter storage or prolonged periods of inactivity, consider performing capacity calibration on the batteries. This involves fully charging and discharging the battery to recalibrate its internal capacity measurements and optimize performance for the new season.
Batteries tend to have a longer lifespan and optimal performance when operated within a certain state of charge range. We recommend using Li-Ion batteries with a state of charge (SOC) of 20-80% of their capacity. Avoid discharging the battery below 10% and overcharging.
